A Target commercial, of all things, compelled me to revisit this album more than a year after its debut as the first proper Concretes LP. Slow down the beats in the catchy commercial and you have the first track of the album. Yeah you know the song, “Say Something New”, it’s supposed to make you want to buy stuff because it’s Swedish, in the same vein of Swede ingenuity as the furniture Target pays Isaac Mizrahi to knock off.
Upon first listen my initial thoughts were The Aislers Set and Mazzy Star must’ve had a baby. A few more plays revealed The Velvet Underground with some Motown thrown in for good measure. Make no mistake though, The Concretes are no more a throwback band than The Jesus and Mary Chain. The Concretes - The Concretes is a solid album, with delicate and deliberately swirled arrangements. I give it a 4 out of 5.
For fans of: Belle & Sebastian, Saturday Looks Good To Me, Slumber Party, Rilo Kiley, and The Sleepy Jackson.
