Every December 31st I’m Reminded of Just How Gross Champaign Is.
So I’m already flopping on one of my new year resolutions, which is posting the site redesign. Yes, that’s right, redesign, not realign, or makeover. Anyway, there should be something new to look at very soon. I’m not a PHP wizard, so the process has been slow, painful, and educational.
So as for the resolutions, I plan to launch a shiny new site, focus my work on web illustration/icon design, create a few reasonably priced icon sets, and live healthier. Kiwi-Strawberry Diet Rite is surprisingly un-gross. Let’s hope Splenda isn’t proven to cause cancer or anything.
Also, some people might’ve heard me talking about a beta I’ve been working on. Some of you may have even emailed me to ask to be part of it. I’m not into the hype machine method of marketing, so I won’t make any promises here. I’m working on a project called ShowMe. It’s not Ajax or Web 2.0. In fact, I don’t even plan to make money from it. I hate missing shows I’d forgotten about or weren’t announced until the last minute, and a lot of people I know hate it too. ShowMe is a site where anyone can post a show, and subscribe to RSS feeds for the shows in your area, so you never have to miss one again. It will be done sometime this year, but I have no idea when because my mySQL force is not strong. Feel free to email me (beth AT resistmedia DOT net) if you’d like to participate in the project’s beta, but no rush because I probably won’t have it ready for a while. To those of you who already emailed me, I haven’t forgotten you.
Diet Rite IS surprisingly ungross. I actually like diet sunkist orange too, though that’s not splenda. It tastes orangey to me, but it might only happen after you’ve been on diet soda for a while.
I was drinking Coca Cola Zero, which I think tastes better than regular coke. It’s not as syrupy. I never really care for Diet Coke. (Though nothing is worse than the vile swill that is Diet Pepsi)
I heard that artificial sweeteners trick your body into thinking they’re sugar, so your body processes them the same way it would real sugar. The exception to this is Splenda. (I’m not sure that this is 100% factual) So that’s why I’m drinking the Diet Rite. The tangerine flavor tastes pretty orange to me. I wish they made diet grape (I’ve only found white grape.)
The Coke Zero is actually Diet “Classic” Coke. Back in 1984 or whenever that was, both New Coke and Diet Coke came out at the same time, based on the same recipe. New Coke was a huge flop, but Diet Coke, being one of the only diet sodas available succeeded.
So, when the put Classic Coke out, they left the diet version alone. Now, with a new sweetener available that tastes more like sugar, trying a diet version of Classic Coke made sense and voila, Coke Zero.

Yes I did know that! I actually remember New Coke, it was disgusting. There was this weird Sam’s Club-esque grocery store called Food 4 Less that still carried it through the early 90s. I don’t trust any beverage that doesn’t go bad after 5 years. They have a Splenda sweetened Diet Coke, but I don’t care for it that much.
Now, did you know that Tab was specifically engineered to taste bad so people would have lowered expectations of diet soda? Ahh the Coca Cola conspiracy runs deep! Ha ha.
As for the PHP issues, nothing to terrible. Learning is just a painful process sometimes haha. If I do get stumped though I’ll shoot you an email, thanks for the offer!
