Simplify Media: Day 1
Last night I installed Simplify Media on my home computer, and this morning I installed it at work. If you’re not already familiar, it’s a free application for sharing your iTunes library over the internet. So far I really like it.
But it has a couple quirks, it doesn’t actually share your library, it shares whatever folder you point to. For me I have an extra folder of crap in there that’s just that, things I haven’t tagged yet, single tracks, etc. Also for some reason it’s ignoring a lot of tags I know I added yesterday, so my library isn’t appearing as nice and clean as it should be. I spent a good chunk of my weekend changing the location of my iTunes library and doing extensive retagging.
It doesn’t share your playlists. Also it says I’m sharing 22,000 some songs, but in browsing there clearly aren’t that many available. I don’t know if this is an issue because my music is on an external drive?
It is relatively quick considering I’m sharing a very large library, and since it works as an iTunes plugin it’s unobtrusive. The buffer time isn’t very noticeable.
Anyone who wants to share music should get this, it’s mostly awesome. It’s great just to share your home library with yourself at work. If you’d like to share with me (you can check out my LastFM profile to see what I’ve been listening to) my username is bethdean. Please don’t mind the mess that is my library while I figure out how to get this to recognize my cleaned up tags.
