Rogue Taxidermy
From Wikipedia:
The Modern Rogue Taxidermy movement differs from traditional taxidermy in that Rogue Taxidermists share the mandate to “advocate the showmanship of oddities, espouse the belief in natural adaptation and mutation, and encourage the desire to create displays of curiosity”.
Wikipedia does a better job explaining this practice than I could. Rogue Taxidermy is sweeping the nation, I see articles about it popping up all over the place. What I find most interesting, is the diverse backgrounds of its practicioners. Some are traditional taxidermists, others former art students, and some biologists. One thing they all have in common however, is immaculate attention to detail, and profound imagination. It’s difficult to look at some of these creations and believe they aren’t real.
More on the subject:
- The art of Sarina Brewer. Possibly the most amazing of this work I’ve seen. Check out the Chimera.

- Village Voice article on rogue taxidermy
- New York Times article on rogue taxidermy, which includes a great photo of Sarina Brewer’s work.
- A Believer article by Michelle Tea on the subject also. You can only read the first half of the article without purchasing the magazine, but I happen to own this issue and can tell you it’s worth the money.
