Some college officials are trying to create a design district in Cleveland. While I think this is a fantastic idea, I don’t know how well such a thing would pan out. A lot of great designers have come from Cleveland, (Michael Beirut anyone?) agencies are springing up everywhere, and a lot of interesting design is happening. Yet no one associates the city with design. (Ironically my employer is one of the largest employers of creatives worldwide.) Funny this should be initiated by someone from CIA, I always thought that school was more known for its medical illustration and fine arts programs. I think something that would help the Ohio design community as a whole would be stronger MFA programs, really the only one in this state I’d even consider is OSU’s.
