I want to like this band. Their first EP and album were great. I played a show with them once in a basement bar, and they were really nice, sweet people. But this album is just crap. All of this bands’ problems can be summed up to trying to hard. They’re trying too hard to […]

An article on giving children internet identities at birth. Doesn’t this put us one step closer to Minority Report? It got me to thinking that not very long from now, there will be young adults whose entire lives have been recorded into the history of permanent internet cache. (Like the baby whose Dad Twittered his […]

Joan Garry weighs in on the LOGO / HRC presidential debates.
“What I will remember is that one of the candidates actually said the name of a real live gay person. Why do I care about this? Because I’m tired of being referred to as an ‘issue.’ I sound like a big problem, don’t I? […]

I was holding out for the vinyl release of this until I saw the awesome cd packaging. It should also be noted that Laura Veirs puts on a phenomenal live show, even when it’s just her and a loop pedal.

Franz Ferdinand Wants You to Download Their Music

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

I like the idea that, because of downloading, people are going to buy songs only if they are good. I think that’s a positive thing. It means lazy bands aren’t going to get away with giving you one hit single and an album full of filler.
This is almost exactly what I’ve been saying all along. […]

Smashing Magazine has an article on Masters of Illustration. Some nice eye candy definitely, but I’d probably call it “Masters of bright colors and swirly shit floating around people.” I’m ready for this trend, and the side-scrolling portfolios that go with it to be over.

Is home. Rained lots. Had a good time. #
Feeling the afternoon lull. I think it’s about time to get started on those afternoon walks I’ve been talking about. #
Does not like when people purport to really like the same things as me, but in fact like them considerably less and fleetingly so. #

Weekend in Columbus

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Friday night I hung out with some friends. Alana tattooed one of them while I had drinks next door. Much guitar hero was played. Saturday I had lunch with my sister and stepdad at Great Lakes. I ate German food. It was gorgeous out so we got to sit on the patio. I received an […]

In case you were wondering what Le Tigre’s been up to. I wasn’t. Personally, I haven’t given a rat’s ass about this band since This Island came out and I heard Visibility pumping out of the Gap. That’s right, a song about queer visibility in a store with questionable attitudes about the gay community, and […]

Reading my feeds in style since I’m now sporting Hicks’ Google Reader theme.

Love of Diagrams

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007
Rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

This is the latest release from Melbourne trio, Love of Diagrams. The album is more vocal heavy than its predecessors, and reminds me a lot of Electrelane’s The Power Out. It’s a perfect listen for a rainy day.

I haven’t heard the latest Northern State album yet, so I’ll reserve judgment. It seems any album to come out in the past 5 years with even a modicum of political innuendo generates much eye rolling. White girls rapping also generates the eye rolling. I don’t get it. This is surely no worse than The […]

Girl overdoses on espresso. Is it a coincidence that the most stressed out, high strung people I know all consume more caffeine than anyone else I know?

I’m late to the game, but Little Brother’s (one of the longest running independent music venues in Ohio) closed. It’s a large slap in the face that absurdly high rent should drive out the very business that revitalized this part of High Street into the booming shopping area it is now. I have many fond […]

Just ordered some business cards. Not bad looking for an hour of work. Hope they are done before I leave for Chicago. #
Could not get out of bed this morning. #
Sometimes Twitter eats my posts. What gives? Also I am very displeased about the bbq sauce on my hoodie right now. #
Is it fun day […]

There’s been some renewed buzz lately on ClearRx, Target’s awesome approach to prescriptions. Design Observer has a great article from a couple years back on the designer. (Poached from AceJet)

Hotel ejects Nobel laureate, mistaking her for a bag lady. “Commentators noted the irony of upmarket resorts discriminating against real Maya while trying to attract tourists with fake Mayan architecture and spectacles.”

Taking a Long Weekend

Friday, August 17th, 2007

I’m going to Columbus for my birthday this weekend, and I’m trying to get as much stuff done before I go as possible, so I probably won’t be posting too much in the next few days, though I set up some future posts for Monday. Things I’m hoping happen over the course of the weekend:

I […]

Salon piece on two books chronicling meth. All politics and the “war on drugs” aside, I firmly believe this is the most dangerous drug in America and ruins the lives of anyone it touches.

Foodies vs. Vegans

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

In the past few years I’ve become interested in good food. I wouldn’t go as far as to call myself a foodie, because I acknowledge that as a picky eater I miss out on a lot of things that are delicious to most other people. But I’ve taken to eating in nicer restaurants, and attempting […]

Always a little late to the game, the NY Times has an article about how hip librarians are right now. Off the top of my head I think I know something like 5 librarians? I certainly know more librarians than any other profession which is not my own.

Is apparently alone in thinking Wes Anderson’s twee film making is trite look at me look at me crap, though slightly endearing. #
Expecting corn chowder and got vile broccoli cheddar instead. What a cruel, cruel surprise. #
How did I not hear about Little Brothers closing?! #
