I Broke Down and Bought an iPhone
I’m sure everyone else is as tired of hearing about these things as I am, so I’ll try to keep this post succinct. Basically my RAZR was a piece of crap and dying. The phone I had before it, a Nokia 3300 tried to pass itself off as an mp3 player and PDA, and it never worked out. I wanted either a bare bones phone, or a phone where I’d actually use all the features bundled with it. After the price drop there was no reason not to buy one since even a new RAZR would’ve been about $300. (I flat out refuse to sign a mobile contract, which means I pay full price for a phone unless I get it from eBay.)
I’ve been really happy with the phone since I’ve bought it last Friday. It’s the first time I’ve actually had fun using a phone. Using even secondary features isn’t cumbersome like the phones I’ve had before, so just doing something like emailing a photo is a delight. I’m still getting acquainted with all its features.
I have only a few beefs so far:
- I can’t double click to highlight long strings of text, counterintuitive to most interfaces.
- I can’t SMS multiple contacts at once, or even seem to recycle the same message
- Can’t drag and drop songs from iTunes library onto iPhone, Apple is preposterous to assume that my entire music library would on be 8g and as such synching the entire library and phone is the best way to add music. So far I’ve just created an iPhone playlist that I sync. Is there a better way to do this?
- No easy eay to get photos off the phone? This might be a user issue. Someone at work told me I can just use iPhoto, so I’ll have to try that out this evening. Otherwise the only way I’ve been able to get them on my computer is by emailing them to Flickr. Any suggestions?
- The camera doesn’t have a zoom.
- No GPS coupled with no copy and paste is extremely frustrating if you’re trying to search for a location that Google maps can’t find. I have to go into regular Google, find the address elsewhere, and then attempt to remember it and punch it back into Google Maps. Is there an easier way I don’t know about?
- No video. The camera is so great it’s a shame I can’t take small videos and post them to YouTube.
- Some photo emails I’ve sent from it never arrived.
I’ve been impressed with:
- Quality of outdoor photos. indoor photos look basically like any other camera phone.
- Ease of use with calendar application
- Ease of setting up my gmail account to work with the phone
- Best speakerphone i’ve had on a phone
- Auto-toggling between edge and wifi

I have been toying with the idea of getting one myself. Not sure yet as unbelievably the Samnsung Sync just won’t give me a reason to get rid of it - other than the fact that it’s not really stylish :0)
And can I say, absolutely gorgeous layout!!!
Are you referring to the iPhone layout? I have to admit I was just waiting for my old phone to show the faintest bit of buggines so I could get a new one!
